Why Mirrorless Is the Only Gear Most Hobbyists Need (and the Rest Is Noise)

The 'gear matters most' myth is wrong. For hobbyists, mirrorless cameras are the practical choice: compact, capable, and the market's future. Here's why.

There's a persistent myth in photography hobby circles: that you need a big, expensive full-frame DSLR with a bag full of lenses to take good pictures. That's wrong. For the vast majority of hobbyists, a mirrorless camera — even an APS-C model — is not only enough, it's the smarter buy. The market has already voted: in 2025, mirrorless cameras outsold DSLRs by nearly nine to one (CIPA). And the trend is only accelerating.

We've spent years testing gear, talking to other hobbyists, and watching the industry data. The truth is that most of us don't need the latest full-frame behemoth. We need a camera that's fun to carry, easy to use, and gives us room to grow. Here's how to think about gear without falling for the marketing.

Do I really need a full-frame camera?

Full-frame sensors (36×24mm, same as 35mm film) have real advantages: larger pixels capture more light, which means less noise at high ISO (Canon Canada). But that comes at a cost — literally. Is 'megapixels' the most important spec?

NASA's '500 Rule' is a great starting point: divide 500 by your lens's focal length in millimeters to get the maximum shutter speed before stars streak.
